I get what yall sayin about rappers who pop always talking about surface level shit that everybody can understand

But that goes against every instinct I have.

Coming up, we looked down on rappers making obvious punchlines about the topic of the day.

Not saying I won't try new things. Just that for a long time, focusing on the fundamentals and technical aspects, and making your punches as intricate as possible, and references somewhat obscure and original, was the name of the game.

But I suppose that's what happens when rappers try to impress other rappers.
    Yea

Thatís called being an And1 athlete. All the cute lil tricks in the world, but when you get in an actual game, youíre trash. You fell into that trap and you most likely wonít ever get out of it bc youíve convinced yourself itís better than making actual music.

    I think you're being a bit extreme

You're generalizing and writing off all rappity rap.

Kendrick, Cole, Nas, Tech, Redman. These are all great rappers not named Marshall, with great albums, who also employ all of the "lil tricks"

I understand the point made by you and Jook that my technical/underground approach isn't the quickest path to fans and fame and all that.

But to just wave it off and say it isn't music is no less ridiculous than a random white rapper going semi-viral by railing against mumble rap and face tats.

If mumble rap was easy to do successfully, everybody would do it.

The same can be said for rappity rap technical bars.

Even drake had to learn the art of marrying cadence with decent rhyme schemes

Well, Quentin or somebody had to anyway

not everybody makes music to have commercial appeal to begin with - its not a 'wrong' approach to do whatever the hell feels right to yourself, if your goal isnt some mass appeal wide-eyed fame

Where ppl go wrong is when they do all of the above then show disdain towards the majority who arenít moved by their very ďpersonalizedĒ music thatís not meant to have mass appeal.

yeah. everyone's kind of a diva for their opinions on art and culture - i never thought pride was necessarily one of the bad things about us...probably only when pride starts to interfere with their life. Like alcohol. It's ok if it's within your control.

word, i can't imagine the world ever embracing "deeply personalized" music

imagine if in the late 90's

some skinny white punk with bleach blonde hair started rapping about cartoonish violence and over the top drug use. What if he dissed his baby momma by name, and made love ballads to his daughter? What if he shit on all of the sellout pop artists clearly aiming for mass appeal who don't put any of their real self in their music.

    that would be crazy

    wouldn't sell any records tho
