I can’t back a religion where you can commit murder, go into a box with a priest to apologize, then you go to heaven.

Busta is right, of course. The idea that religions are all the same with different façades is a myth. In fact, it's the other way around: religions are superficially similar, with profound differences in their core beliefs.

Christianity & Buddhism may have similar ethics & practices, but they are of two different kinds.

Christianity teaches us that humans are fallen and sinful, and that the Supreme Being offered his son as a blood sacrifice to redeem the human race, and if you accept this offer, you can return to communion with God and retain our lost perfection.

Buddhism teaches that life is unsatisfactory, that you'll never truly be content because of your desire/clinging to temporary things, which in turn keeps you trapped in a cycle of rebirth. Samsara includes heavens, hells, the human world, and many other layers, but within it there's always death/rebirth/suffering. The only solution is to seek enlightenment through proper thought/action/effort/etc and eventually escape the cycle.

As you see, profoundly different concepts, despite superficial similarities.

Catholicism emphasizes faith + works, meaning it's not enough to believe and repent, you have to make an effort and do your part. It's the Protestants who believe that faith alone is enough. So this common criticism of Christianity, where you can be a scumbag, accept Jesus, then get to heaven, is really a Protestant issue. For a Catholic, Confession is important but not enough, you need Penance as well.
Theories about rights, freedom, and dignity are dangerous, however - dangerous to tyrannies of all kinds, of ignorance, superstition, poverty, and the rest.

Esoteric Christianity and Sufism align with Buddhism pretty strongly.
